Your feminist book club in Rome

Feminism Between The Lines

Feminism in Action, Not Just in Print.

Let’s read, learn, and connect! Feminism Between the Lines is an intersectional feminist book club based in Rome where we explore iconic and thought-provoking feminist works — from classics to modern voices reshaping the conversation today.

We meet once a month in person to share insights, ask questions, and exchange perspectives in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Between meetups, this site keeps the conversation flowing: whether you missed the gathering or simply prefer to join online, here you can continue our chat about the book of the month, share resources, and post your own reflections to keep ideas moving.

For event organisation and sign-ups, we use MeetUp, which helps us manage attendance and waiting lists efficiently. Bigger decisions— like suggesting new titles, voting on future reads, setting meeting dates, or coordinating logistics —happen in WhatsApp, where our core group is active.

Our club is international, discussions are in English, and everyone curious about intersectional feminism is welcome. Our feminism is combative, rooted in human rights, inclusive of trans rights, and devoted to dismantling patriarchy and all forms of oppression.

Discuss, disrupt, dismantle. Turn the page, change the world.

RULES AND ETIQUETTE

To keep our book club a space where everyone feels respected, heard, and safe, we follow a few clear principles. These guidelines encourage open dialogue, honest debate, and real connection — creating an environment where ideas can challenge us without disrespect or hostility.
1: This is a non-judgmental, inclusive, and safe space.
Our community is grounded in mutual respect, empathy, and curiosity. Some conversations may trigger strong emotions or touch on vulnerable experiences — that’s part of meaningful dialogue. Be mindful when sharing opinions on sensitive topics, and communicate if something feels triggering or overwhelming. If you’re very involved and passionate about a topic with which someone disagrees, don’t take it personally. We assume good intent from the start. Remember: we come from different cultures, backgrounds, and languages, and sometimes things can get lost in translation.
2: Accountability matters.
We call out problematic behaviour when it happens. The same applies to our online spaces: debate ideas, not people. Challenge systems, not individuals. Critique behaviour, not identity. We want to foster healthy debates on controversial and uncomfortable topics, where everyone is free to share their lived experiences and opinions, and to question and be challenged. But freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences — this is not a space for hate, bigotry, or discrimination in any form.
3: Open to all, except intolerance.
The club welcomes everyone, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or background. We just don’t tolerate intolerants.
4: Read what you can, join how you can.
We encourage everyone to read the book of the month, but if life gets busy, come anyway! You can still contribute valuable thoughts and perspectives. Can’t make it in person? Keep the discussion going online in the Book of the Month section.
5: Share and listen in equal measure.
This is a space for exchange, not monologues. Bring your insights, but also make room for others’ voices.
6: We’ll keep it cheap.
We aim to keep costs minimal and meetings affordable (or free whenever possible). Everyone should have access to a feminist community and conversation without financial barriers.
  • To keep conversations meaningful and manageable, each meeting will be limited to 15 participants.
  • The official sign-up will happen through MeetUp. However, we’ll share the link in our WhatsApp group first so regular members get early access. We want to prioritise our core group while still welcoming new members who bring fresh perspectives.
  • If the event is full, you can join the waiting list. You may only attend once a spot becomes available and you are moved onto the attendee list.
  • Please confirm your attendance. We’ll send a confirmation request one week before the meeting. If you do not confirm, your spot will be offered to someone on the waiting list. If you cannot attend, let us know in advance so your spot can go to someone else.
  • ⚠️ No-shows or last-minute cancellations without a valid reason will result in a temporary ban from the next meeting(s). Please be fair to others—signing up is a commitment, and skipping your spot takes away someone else’s chance to join.
  • Try to finish the book before we meet so everyone can fully join the conversation.
  • Submit your questions, insights, or discussion insights in advance to help the host guide the conversation. A shared document will be provided for you to add them.
  • Hosts: prepare a script with all the questions or prompts submitted by attendees to keep the conversation flowing. Make sure everyone has the opportunity to speak and that the conversation stays on track.
  • Note takers: focus on recording key insights and questions that may need further discussion. After the session, create a brief summary to share on the website for those who couldn’t attend or to continue the conversation.
  • Speak and listen in equal measure, respect everyone, be mindful of sensitive topics, and avoid judgment.
